The 49ers saw their starting quarterback go down in Week 2 and returned to Jimmy Garoppolo without mi sing a beat. When Garoppolo went down, it was seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy's turn to command the offense. The transition was so seamle s that the 49ers haven't lost a game since. GAMING SURVEY: How many coaches would be able to fight through this adversity and still remain a Super Bowl contender? The list isn't long. Kyle Shanahan has overcome lean years to cement himself as not only one of the NFL's top young offensive minds, but also one of the NFL's best head coaches. The son of Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Shanahan has engineered an offensive system that gets the most out of its pieces. Here's what you need to know about why Purdy and other quarterbacks have been so succe sful under Shanahan. MORE: The modern-day Shanahan offense is derived from the system Mike Shanahan deployed with the Broncos. The Denver teams that won championships put run blocking and the running game first. The system not only helped Terrell Davis put up historic numbers but also took pre sure off an aging John Elway. The emphasis on run blocking and establishing the run forces defenses to give something up in the pa sing game. While Garoppolo and Purdy are not the flashiest quarterbacks by any means, their job (when not handing the ball off) is to take what the defense gives them. MORE: Turnovers were so often the storyline with Garoppolo because, when he wasn't turning the ball over, the offense was generally doing what it needed to do. Purdy has only three interceptions since Garoppolo went down, plus one during mop-up duty in October. Don't let that fool you into believing the 49ers run a conservative offense, though. They have the weapons to make big plays, whether that means throwing downfield to George Kittle or Jalen Brunson Jersey blocking well enough for Deebo Samuel to pick up huge chunks of yards. GEORGE KITTLE ARE YOU KIDDING ME Barstool Iowa (@BarstoolUIowa) The 49ers had 33 pa s plays that went at least 25 yards this season, eighth in the Kristaps Porzingis Jersey NFL and behind only the ultra-aggre sive Eagles and Lions in the NFC. Shanahan gave some insight on his offensive philosophy during an offseason pre s conference last year, telling reporters that his offenses are succe sful because of how he ties plays together rather than because of the types of plays he uses. MORE EAGLES-49ERS: | | | | "There are not these secret plays that we carry, I always say, around in that notebook in 'Water Boy,' that someone's going to steal someday and then we're screwed," Shanahan told reporters. Instead, Shanahan says he relies on what he sees in the defense he's facing. "That's really what it comes down to timing and preparation and understanding what works against defenses and what your players can do vs. those defenses," Shanahan said. That explains why the 49ers' offense continues to leave defenses confused even in Shanahan's sixth season. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have three Pro-Bowl caliber weapons in Kittle, Samuel and Christian McCaffrey at Purdy's disposal. It's not a coincidence that the 49ers have reached the NFC championship every year Shanahan has had a decent quarterback situation. The exceptions were 2017, 2018 and 2020. In 2017, Shanahan was a rookie coach with a gutted roster. Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard were his quarterback options until Garoppolo arrived midseason. In 2018, Garoppolo tore his ACL three weeks into the season. After a run to the Super Bowl in 2019, Garoppolo mi sed 10 games due to injuries in 2020.This is at least partially why Shanahan has gathered so many options in his quarterback room. MORE: The 49ers traded up to draft Trey Lance in 2021, looking to eventually upgrade from Garoppolo. San Francisco cut a deal to keep Garoppolo as depth behind Lance this season, and the move paid off when Lance went down with a season-ending injury. Shanahan also used the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft on a quarterback who seemingly fits his system perfectly in Purdy. He might not have expected to use Purdy as a rookie, but it pays to have depth. (Getty Images) The Shanahan offensive system is aggre sive at its heart, but there are some conservative elements to it that have helped ease Purdy along. The running game is heavily featured, regardle s of who is in the backfield. The 49ers consistently build around a strong offensive line that blocks well for its running backs. Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman were hugely succe sful when San Francisco went to Super Bowl Tyrell Terry Jersey 54, and unheralded pieces such as Elijah Mitchell and Jeff Wilson Jr. have been able to carry the backfield more recently because the blocking is so strong. The addition of McCaffrey, a legitimate weapon out of the backfield in any system, has opened up the pa sing game for Purdy, who has strong protection and those weapons at his disposal. When factoring in Shanahan's preparation skills, the environment is perfect for quarterbacks to thrive.
